Bangkok characteristics / geography
Bangkok is located on the delta of the Chao Phraya River, which runs through the city. Bangkok is made up of 1569 square kilometers and is made from a mix of old and new. Below is a more detailed description of the characteristics of Bangkok: Transport: In the past people used Thai boats on rivers to get around instead of main roads. As the city has become more populated the government has had to build main highways and roads. The roads are very congested and the traffic has little order. Travelling on the rivers is less common. Mostly along the river now are large houses and old palaces which are very popular among the tourists and are owned by the wealthy. The Megacity - Bangkok has modernized rapidly since the 1960’s, the inner city of Bangkok is more commercial and the outer city is more industrial. Many buildings are built high and not very wide, to save space. The buildings are a mix of old and new depending on location and time built. Throughout the city of Bangkok food and merchandise are sold daily. Housing and land infrastructure: The living conditions are poor in Bangkok unless you are wealthy. As a consequence of the rapidly increasing and large population houses are small and very basic. The houses are either one or two story houses with no back yard. There is no free land in Bangkok; it has all been urbanized by rivers, buildings, roads, houses and shops. Tourism |
